Mike Mitchell joined the Wakefields Lawyers team in 2024.

Mike has over 15 years of experience in commercial and property law. He has advised on contracting, property, and business transactions for corporates, local and central government, and agribusiness and port companies.

Mike started his career with a national forest and land management firm, offering specialist primary industries expertise in rural law, forestry, and climate change. He facilitated some of the first and largest trades of forestry carbon credits under the NZ Emissions Trading Scheme.

He started in private practice with a large provincial firm, before moving to a national commercial property team, then working on commercial matters in central government.

He graduated with degrees in law and commerce from Otago University, and has a Masters degree in Environmental Management from Massey University. He is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Forestry. Mike has lectured internationally in commercial and company law at university undergraduate level in Asia.

Outside of work, Mike enjoys travelling with his wife and 2 young children, going to the gym, and fitting in as many music gigs as he can. He is a committed yet objective sports fan, and helps out on the committee of his hometown rugby club. Mike is an iwi member of Ngāi Tahu.
